About the Program

Head Start is a federal program for preschool children of all abilities, from income-eligible families. The Head Start program is operated by local non-profit organizations in almost every county in the country. Children who attend Head Start participate in a variety of educational activities while socializing with other children to help prepare them for kindergarten.

Parent engagement is vital to the Head Start philosophy — parents are the primary educators in their child's life and are offered opportunities to participate through volunteering, serving on committees or Policy Councils.

Program Overview

The SIEOC Head Start program serves children and their families each year through center-based programs in Dearborn, Franklin, Ohio, Ripley and Switzerland counties. The program serves 204 enrollees across our 12 locations.

We must adhere to income guidelines, however there may be exceptions for families and children with special needs or circumstances.

Our program is not your usual preschool. We are teaching through creative play with activities that provide hands-on experience with education materials. Social and Self Help skills are the most important skills necessary for children to succeed in kindergarten and these are gained through fun learning activities. They receive healthy meals and snacks and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe setting.

Head Start offers assistance to parents interested in obtaining a High School Equivalency (HSE) or other adult education opportunities. Family members can take part in training classes on topics such as child rearing, job training, health and nutrition, and the availability of many resources in your own community.

Head Start offers parents opportunities and support for growth, so that they can identify their own strengths, needs and interests, and find their own solutions.

We support parents as they identify and meet their own goals, nurture the development of their children, and advocate for communities that are supportive of children and families of all cultures.
